“Emmett − Tief in meinem Herzen” (“Emmett – Deep in My Heart”) is a film with theatrical elements, telling the story of the 14-year-old Black teenager Emmett Till, who became the victim of a racist murder in Mississippi, USA, in 1955. This murder is considered the spark for the civil rights movement in the USA as well as a global, public-media confrontation with racism.

Emmett’s story is not an exclusively Black or American story. Emmett had to die because he (allegedly) whistled after a White woman, while his killers were acquitted by an all-male, all-White jury, only to openly admit to the murder in an interview a short time later. “Cases like Emmett's are repeated in Germany and around the world. They affect us all – they are the stories of each and every one of us. Almost 70 years after Emmett Till’s murder, we live in a world that is still shaped by structural racism. We live in a world where White police officers murder Black people in broad daylight, where people perceived as Black, Asian, Arab or Turkish are frequent victims of racially motivated murders, while the general public looks the other way, witnesses are intimidated and the state fails to address these crimes, and the media – including theatre and film – continue to spread racist stereotypes and clichés, even though they claim to be changing their ways. We live in a world where Black football players are called the N-word and receive death threats if they miss a penalty. We live in a world where Black (German) perspectives are still rarely told, seen or heard – which is exactly why we, Label Noir, are telling Emmett's story from a Black German perspective and bringing it to the screen as an Afrodiasporic ensemble.” (Label Noir)

Following the premiere at HAU1 on 24.1., Label Noir and Yugen Yah will discuss, among other things, the extent to which “Emmett – Tief in meinem Herzen” fulfils a deeply human concern as well as a cultural-political mission.
